RE: Nutrasweet and Splenda Free!

Well Yep, I guess you caught me. I thought I could keep it secret for a while longer but yes, when I was with FDA we used to go to work each morning just wondering how many faulty/deadly/dangerous products we could approve and dangerous inadequate manufacturing facilities and procedures we could ignore. And that was just before lunch. Of course our lunch would be purchased by those same drug companies that we went easy on in the safety and efficacy studies. But keep babbling on, but I would continue to wear my tinfoil hat if I were you. bumpy Thank you so much for your enlightening and informative post. As usual, we all greatly appreciate your contributions to this and other topics. :R

RE: Nutrasweet and Splenda Free!

We need to educate ourselves as (I feel) the government is doing its best to keep america sick, more drugs, more doctors equals more money! No sick people is NOT good for the health care industry! Let me know if you ever want to learn more about Sunrider. Angie While I agree with you that we all need to eat healthier, I think you're misguided on the above statement. The gov't has no financial interest in keeping people sick. The majoirty of health care costs are borne by the gov't in the form of Medicare and Medicaid. And hospitals lose money by taking care of sick people. Are you a dealer of these products? I think to state that the government has a financial interest in keeping people sick is a stretch.......But why, then are these products approved?? There is plenty of evidence that these substances are quite harmful to a great number of people. I smell food industry lobbyists as the culprits here.....

RE: Nutrasweet and Splenda Free!

I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Sure makes me wonder how many more people with those diagnosis would be well if they went off all food additives! I'd bet that many ADHD and other children's problems are linked to these too! I had terrible insomnia from MSG in addition to other issues. I would be SO tired at night, but my brain just wouldn't stop - I felt like just my brain was on speed or something....and it kept me up most of the night. Now that I try to avoid MSG, I sleep MUCH better. By the way, chemically MSG and Aspartame are kissing cousins.....

RE: Why are people against RVing?

I think moderation is the key. If we all try to be less wasteful... we all win. Here in lies the problem. Define "wasteful" Wasteful. Definition: When YOU do, own or purchase something that I dont think you need. Very well put.

RE: Sweet Corn on the Cob

I let the water come to a boil before adding the corn. I put the corn in the water and cook for 3 minutes after the water returns to a boil. You need to use a lot of water especially if cooking a large amount. If you put a lot of corn in a little bit of water, it takes a long time for the water to return to a boil and the corn gets overcooked. Basically you want to heat up the corn and not cook it that much. I like to "sample" the corn before I buy. I will pull off a kernel from the small end and try it to see how sweet it is.

RE: Nutrasweet and Splenda Free!

I don't have any specific recipes, but I understand your concern about the artificial sweeteners. I've had issues in the past with both aspartame and sucralose and try to avoid them. MSG is another problem that can cause some nasty effects. It is a challenge to avoid all of these products as they are in almost everything. It helps to buy fresh foods and cook things from scratch instead of using convenience foods. I have been using saccharin for a long time with no ill effects. I've tried stevia, but just don't care for the taste. As for desserts, fruit, fresh or frozen with the low calorie, low fat dessert topping is pretty good. It does have some sugar, but not much considering you aren't using a lot of it.

RE: Seasonal Site near Chicago?

We just returned from Blackhawk Campground in Milton, WI. It was our first time there. It is mostly a seasonal campground, but has a fairly nice overnight area. It is on a small lake that does allow boating. This year, however, they have a no wake restriction all summer because of the the flooding in the spring. There were a few other places in that area that appeared to have seasonal campsites with water access. It's a nice area and close to home!

RE: CG in or near Colorado Springs, Co

You might consider Mountaindale RV Park, about 15 miles south of Colorado Springs. It is Passport America, rural and lovely. FHU and WIFI. Ditto - very nice park. Check out their great reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com.

RE: Searching for a Pickle Relish??

I just checked out that link for the Il Primo giardinara. (BTW - in our area it is pronounced JAR-DI-NAIR) WOW - what a bargain! and very cheap shipping. I don't think I could get the stuff to you at that price....

RE: Searching for a Pickle Relish??

Thanks Haftacamp,, I did find how to order on line, the Beef look good, they have some reciepts there that I think I will try. I found the Giardiniera Mix from the sit that firecapt1 posted and I order a goood supply. I know that the others are not as good as what I purchased there and have bought several jars and threw most of it out. Maybe this is the real stuff. I will let you know when it arrives. Thanks for the information Il Primo Brand is a good brand. You will like it. Enjoy!

RE: Searching for a Pickle Relish??

Mytime, Call these people and see if they will ship you some. This is one of the largest restaurant suppliers of Italian Beef in the Chicago area. They are not too far from our home. From time to time, we drive to their facility and they sell us beef at almost cost, even though they sell it retail in many stores in our area. They are great people, and I'd bet they would give you a great deal without raping you on shipping. Bari Beef Every time we travel to visit out of town relatives and friends, they ask us to bring them Giardinara in large quantities. They sell it in large 1 gallon containers in many places here. Funny how you can only get it here. The stuff sold in other parts of the country just isn't the same. You could also try calling Angelo Caputo's Market or Valli's Produce in the Chicago area and see if they would ship you some. If you cannot find it, PM me - my arm could be twisted to send some out to you.

RE: Seasonal Site near Chicago?

Try Martin Campground. I think they are in Joliet, IL but just off I-80 east of I-55. I don't think I-80 allows watersports....:B LOL - funny! We've been boaters for many years. It is a challenge to find anywhere to go in our area. Chain-O-Lakes is a boat parade on the weekends and not our idea of fun. The rivers (Mississippi, Illinois, Rock) are much less crowded, but the current can put a damper on watersports and swimming. Lake Michigan - not really suitable for small boats. Going south, there are a few COE lakes with COE campgrounds - but no boat slip rentals, no development on the lake, and no seasonal campgrounds. Lake Geneva and Lake Delavan are nice for boating, but again, no campgrounds on the lake. The closest and nicest lake we have found is 3 1/2 hours away - Castlerock Lake in Wisconsin. There is only one campground with seasonal sites AND boat slips. Michaels Landing. Be warned, however, it is NOT a typical campground. It is a Wisconsin style bar that has a few campsites - 30 maybe - in the woods. No ammenities - no shower/pool etc. It might not be suitable for small children because of the bar/party element. Not sure if any of the sites have sewer hook ups, but they do have a dump. The owner just invested in a bunch of new boat slips and also rents pontoon boats. We've thought about getting a seasonal there, but for us, summer is just too short, and it is just too far. So we haul the boat up there for the weekend once or twice a year with the MH and Michael launches the boat for us. It is really nice for a 3 day weekend. The lake is awesome with several restaurants and a few places to beach the boat and swim. It is a COE lake, but they have allowed some development. There is some REALLY nice property on the lake, but very $$$$$.

RE: Seasonal Site near Chicago?

We are at Lakeland Camping Resort and love it. It's in Milton, WI on a 10,000 acre lake (Lake Koshkonong). It takes us 1 hour, 15 minutes to get there from the far northwest suburbs. Send me a private message if you're interested in hearing more about it. I think you might get a discount if you're recommended by a current seasonal. Other campgrounds that I know people have seasonal sites: Blackhawk Campground, Ft. Atkinson Yogi Bear, Hidden Valley, and Crazy Horse. All are in Wisconsin, but within 1 1/2 hours of the north suburbs. We'd be interested in taking our boat out on this lake. It is very close to the Chicago area - in fact, were going to try Blackhawk campground this weekend. We tried boating here maybe 20 years ago and the lake was extremely shallow. Has it changed at all?

RE: Seasonal Site near Chicago?

Lake Louise in Byron is right across the street from a public boat launch on the Rock River. Pretty nice place, but if I were to choose a seasonal anwhere, it would be Timberlake Resort.

RE: Illinois Campers Unite

Please lets not make this important thread about politics and run the risk of getting it locked. We need to band together to save our parks and historic sites. I also want to thank Grumpy for bringing this to the attention of so many concerned citizens. I'm sorry but everything here in Illinois is politics. that's just the reality of it and this particular instance of their *#^&$*&^ match doesn't make it any different. Ditto - Impossible to separate politics here in IL - unfortunately it is reality.

RE: Illinois Campers Unite

This governor isn't going to reverse himself. He's going to blame Mike Madigan and the House but he's not going to take responsibility. The past few years he's cut DNR pretty hard already. It's one of the reasons the last DNR director left early. I think the people of IL are sick of Blago blaming everything on Madigan...it doesn't fly anymore - besides they hugged :B so he'll have to find someone else to blame his incompetance on...
